This image shows three french peasant women pulling a plow through a field. This picture was taken during the First World War, approximately August 3rd, 1917. The Germans had just left that area of France in retreat, taking all the horses or cattle with them. The peasants, after re-taking the District, found themselves in a miserable situation, where everything was destroyed and desert. Without any horses or cattle they had to work really hard in order to get ready for the winter that was approaching. This picture shows only one small angle of that time of extreme difficulties. A woman was doing the work of a mule, probably because her husband died during the dreadful war. Alone in a country devastated by war, it is impressive to think that these women were still able to survive and raise their children.
